YouTube QR code

The scan opens a video or a channel. For a trade fair stand, a machine, an exhibition label or a product box, it is the shortest path from a physical thing to moving pictures.

Create a YouTube code

Video, channel or playlist

Short answer

Put the video URL, not the share link with a timestamp or a playlist parameter, unless you want the playback to start at a point. Check that the video is public and not age restricted, because a login wall ends the scan. 10 cm on a poster read from two metres, 2.5 cm on a card.

This is the type where the code itself is trivially simple and the content behind it is the whole risk. A video that opens with an advert, a login prompt or a broken embed makes the print run worthless.

So the useful part of this page is the checklist before printing, not the mechanics of generating the code.

What goes in the code

A watch URL, youtu.be or youtube.com/watch, for one video. A channel URL for everything. A playlist URL when a sequence is the point, for example a series of assembly steps.

Two parameters are worth knowing. A timestamp parameter makes playback begin at a second, which is useful when the segment matters and wasteful when it confuses people who wanted the beginning. A playlist parameter changes what plays next, and on a screen in a public place that can lead somewhere you did not choose.

  • Public, not unlisted, if strangers are scanning it
  • No timestamp unless a specific moment is the reason for the code
  • No autoplay playlist on a code used in public
  • Short URLs keep the pattern sparse and easier to read

What breaks a printed video code

Age restriction is the first killer, because it shows a sign in prompt. Region locks are the second, and they are invisible from your own desk. Ads are the third, and while they cannot be avoided on the free platform, a video that opens on a 30 second advert is a bad experience for someone standing in a queue.

Private or unlisted videos are a trap in the other direction: unlisted works for anyone with the link, which is fine for a code on a machine in a staff area and wrong for a code on a product box.

Sound, and why it decides the placement

A video in a public place with sound on is a nuisance. On a trade fair stand, in a museum, in a waiting room, the room is louder than the phone speaker and the neighbours hear it before the viewer does.

Two practical answers: caption the video so it works muted, and say on the label that it has captions. A silent-friendly video with text on screen is usable in a queue, a conversation without captions is not.

Where it earns its place

Assembly and maintenance videos on a machine or a product box, an explainer at the end of a stand, a recorded tour at an exhibition, a recipe on a pack, a repair video attached to a serial number.

Less useful on a business card or a poster with no relationship to a video. If the video is not the reason someone is standing there, the code is a detour.

Sizes and the label

Video codes are usually read from a distance, because the thing they sit on is a poster, a machine or a stand. 10 cm for one to two metres, 5 cm for a metre, 2.5 cm for a card.

The label must promise the format and the length: Watch the assembly, 2 minutes, with captions. A code labelled with the platform rather than the content gets scanned less, because nobody wants to watch an advert.

Questions about video codes

Can the code start the video automatically?

No. The phone opens the page and the reader presses play. Browsers block sound that starts on its own, which is why captions matter more than autoplay.

Can I link to a channel instead of a video?

Yes. A channel is right when the point is to subscribe, a video when the point is one specific answer.

Why does it ask viewers to sign in?

Usually an age restriction or a region lock on the video, not a fault in the code. Check from a device that is not signed in.

Does a printed code still work if I replace the video?

Only if the video keeps its URL, which it does when you edit it. Uploading a replacement gives a new URL and kills the printed code.
