WhatsApp QR code for a chat
A WhatsApp code opens a chat with a specific number, optionally with the first message already typed. The reader still sends it themselves, which keeps the conversation two-sided.

Short answer
The code holds a wa.me link with the number in international format and an optional prefilled text. Scanning opens WhatsApp, or the web app if it is not installed. It cannot send a message on its own and it cannot join a group silently.
WhatsApp is already the default channel for a lot of small businesses, and putting the chat behind a code removes the step where a customer copies a number from a website and finds the wrong country code.
The mechanics are simple, and the small print is where the disappointments live.
What the code contains
A wa.me address followed by the number in international format without plus signs, spaces or brackets. A query parameter can carry a message that appears already typed in the input field.
The prefilled text is a typing aid, not an automatic send. The reader can edit it, delete it, or write something else entirely, which is what makes the channel usable rather than a source of unsolicited messages.
- Number with country code, no leading zero, no plus inside the link
- Keep the prefilled text short, long text gets cut off on small screens
- One code per team or per person, a shared inbox needs a different approach
- Test on desktop as well, the browser falls back to WhatsApp Web
Where a printed code earns its place
On a shop counter, a delivery note, a service van, a business card or a poster at a market stall: places where the customer is standing in front of you and the phone is in their hand. The code collapses the distance between the sign and the conversation to one tap.
On a website it adds little. There the click to chat link already does the same job with better tracking and no camera in the middle.
Number, profile and privacy
The number in the code is the number the reader sees, and it is also the number saved if they choose to save the contact. For a business that is usually the point; for a private individual it means a piece of personal data on a public sign. Use a dedicated business number if the code will be printed somewhere permanent.
Set the profile name and photo before printing. A chat that opens on an unnamed number with no picture reads as a wrong number, and the first impression is the one that decides whether the message gets written.
What it cannot do
It cannot add the contact to the reader address book, it cannot send a message without a tap, and it cannot bypass the block list. If someone has blocked the number, the chat simply does not open, and nothing on the printed side can change that.
It also cannot promise that the conversation is answered. A code on a van that leads to a number nobody monitors is worse than no code at all.
Questions about WhatsApp codes
Do I need a WhatsApp Business account?
No. The link works with any WhatsApp account. A business profile adds opening hours and a catalogue, but the QR code does not depend on it.
Does the prefilled message get sent automatically?
No. It appears in the input field and the reader sends it. That is a deliberate part of the design and it keeps the first message personal.
Why does the link open a browser instead of the app?
On desktop there is no app to open, so wa.me redirects to WhatsApp Web. On a phone with WhatsApp installed the app takes over, provided the link is formed correctly.
Should I use my personal number?
Only if you accept that it is published. A separate business number keeps private calls and customer chats apart and can be handed over if the business changes hands.
Can a code start a group chat?
Group invite links exist, but they are a different payload and they let anyone join. For a customer-facing code, a single chat is the safer default.
